China ROM Setup Guide: Notifications, Apps and Battery

RK STORE · PRACTICAL GUIDE

Updated 23 October 2026

Want your China ROM phone to suit the way you use it? Start with a few simple adjustments: choose your apps, organise notifications and personalise the interface.

Menu names and available settings depend on the phone and its ColorOS, OriginOS, HyperOS or MagicOS version. If an option is missing, try the English search term in Settings. The illustrations are guides, not screenshots of actual menus.

1. Getting started: the basic steps

  1. Choose an available system language and connect Wi-Fi or insert your SIM. Languages depend on the exact model; choose English or German if listed.
  2. Enable automatic date, time and time zone where available, then check that the clock and zone are correct.
  3. Open the preinstalled Google Play Store, sign in and install your apps. When a notification permission prompt appears, allow apps you want to hear from.
  4. Check for available updates in system Settings and the Play Store. Install larger updates with sufficient battery and a stable connection.
  5. Try the essentials: a call, an SMS, mobile data, the camera and a message with the screen off.

If everything works the way you want, you can stop here. Adjust the remaining options when you need them.

2. What should you turn on or off?

Setting Practical recommendation
Notifications ON for apps you want alerts from; choose sounds, lock-screen visibility and banners separately. [1]
Autostart ALLOW IF NEEDED for important apps if messages arrive late or stop after a restart. [2]
Background activity and data ALLOW IF NEEDED for important apps. If you use Data Saver, check the affected app’s exception. [3]
Battery restrictions REMOVE ONLY FOR THE AFFECTED APP if notifications are delayed; leave other apps on normal optimisation. [4]
Promotional recommendations OFF IF YOU PREFER for recommendations, offers and marketing notifications where the app provides a switch. This may not remove every advert.
Google Play Protect KEEP ON for app scanning. [5]
Google services KEEP ACTIVE Google Play services. If a “Google basic services” switch exists, leave it enabled while using Google services. [6]
High performance / aggressive cleaning AVOID ROUTINELY ENABLING high performance or aggressive app closing. Start with the defaults for everyday use.

Background recommendations apply to selected apps such as messaging, email or a smartwatch companion. You do not need to enable everything for every app.

3. Delayed notifications: check the affected app

If messages arrive only when you open the app, change that app’s settings one at a time. First check the connection, the latest app version and its own notification settings. Power saving can delay background work. [2][4]

  1. Allow notifications. Long-press the icon → App info → Notifications. Enable the categories you want, then check sounds, banners and lock-screen visibility. You can hide message content for privacy. [1]
  2. Check this app’s battery settings. In App info or Battery, look for Allow background activity, Unrestricted or No restrictions. Allow background work if the current restriction is causing delays. [4][9]
  3. Allow autostart. If available, enable Auto launch or Background autostart for this app. This is particularly useful when the problem starts after a reboot. [8]
  4. Check data and Do Not Disturb. Allow background data. With Data Saver enabled, check the app’s exception. Review Do Not Disturb schedules and check whether the conversation is muted inside the app. [1][3]
  5. Optionally keep the app in Recents. Some systems offer a padlock or Lock in recent apps. This can protect it from a manual “Clear all”, but does not replace the permissions above. Avoid routinely force-stopping an important app. [10]

4. Where to look on each brand

These are search terms with example paths. Manufacturers move options between software versions, so use the controls actually available on your phone.

OPPO / China-market OnePlus · ColorOS

Look for Auto launch, App battery management and Allow background activity. An example autostart path is Settings → Apps → Auto launch, where available. Check notifications and background activity for the selected app. [7]

Xiaomi / Redmi · HyperOS

Search for Background autostart and No restrictions. Example: Settings → Apps → Permissions → Background autostart; some versions show it directly under Apps. Adjust the battery restriction separately for the app that needs it. [8][9]

vivo / iQOO · OriginOS

Search for Autostart and Background power consumption management. On some versions, startup permission is in iManager → App manager → Autostart manager. Treat this as a starting point; your OriginOS version may use a different path. [2]

HONOR · MagicOS

Search for App launch or Launch. If needed, switch the affected app to manual management and allow Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background. These names come from HONOR’s watch-app example; they are not mandatory settings for every app. [10]

5. Which apps can you remove?

Remove apps you recognise and do not use. Long-press the icon or open Settings → Apps → [app] → Uninstall, if offered. Some preinstalled apps cannot be removed through normal settings. [11]

A general guide: remove recognised user apps and keep system components.

Optional removals if you do not use them

  • Regional shopping, video, music and news apps, plus preinstalled games that offer a normal uninstall option.
  • Duplicate browsers, keyboards or other user apps after choosing a replacement and checking that it works.
  • Unwanted shortcuts and notifications. Removing a home-screen icon alone does not uninstall the app.

If an app cannot be uninstalled, you can silence its notifications or remove its shortcut. Use “Disable” only for a recognised app where the system offers it. You do not need an additional “cleaner” for this guide.

6. Language, keyboard and preferred apps

Keyboard and apps

Install your preferred keyboard, browser, navigation and email apps from the already available Play Store. Choose defaults under Default apps where the system allows it.

Language and region

Keyboard language and individual app languages can differ from the system language. Adding a Croatian keyboard does not translate the entire interface. Check the specific model’s listing for supported languages.

Home screen

Arrange icons and widgets, adjust text size, and choose gestures or navigation buttons. Turn off unwanted home-screen content or recommendations if a suitable switch exists.

Maps, weather and time

Check automatic time, location access for apps that need it and units such as °C. Changing the region does not guarantee access to a region-restricted feature.

7. Battery: choose settings that suit your routine

Start with the standard battery profile. If an app is delayed, create an exception for that app. Allowing more background work can increase power use; monitor your normal routine after a change. [4]

Adjust the display and charging to taste: Always-on display, refresh rate, brightness and optimised charging, if offered. Change one thing at a time so you can judge what suits you.

Smartwatch or fitness band: open the companion app and grant the connection permissions it needs. Give notification access only to a trusted companion app when you want alerts forwarded, then check its background activity. [10]

8. Privacy, security and backups

Permissions

Grant camera, microphone and location access only as needed, such as while using the app where offered. Review permissions occasionally in App info. [12]

Device protection

Set a PIN and fingerprint or another available unlock method. Keeping Play Protect on and installing available updates is a good start. Check Play Store → profile → Play Protect → Settings → Scan apps with Play Protect. [5]

Backups

If Google backup is available on your firmware, enable the items you want and check that a backup has completed. Check photos and chats separately in Google Photos and your messaging app; not every app backs up the same data. [13]

Promotional content

Optionally switch off personalised recommendations, promotional messages and user-experience improvement programmes where offered. Names and effects vary by manufacturer.

9. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install Google Play myself?

China ROM phones purchased from RK Store already have Google Play preinstalled. Signing in with your own Google account is part of normal initial setup.

Do I have to make every change?

No. If your apps and notifications behave as you want, keep your current settings. This guide helps you adjust what you personally need.

Does Google Play mean Android Auto, Wallet and eSIM work?

Check these features separately for the exact model and regional version. Google Play alone does not confirm support. Our China ROM vs Global ROM guide covers further checks.

Do I need another ROM or a factory reset?

All adjustments here use ordinary phone settings. A factory reset erases personal data and can remove apps installed afterwards; back up first and ask us about the preparation of your specific device before resetting.

What should I provide if I still need help?

Tell us the exact model, software version and app, and whether delays occur on Wi-Fi, mobile data or only after a restart. Screenshots of notification and battery settings can help; leave out personal information.
